1976年7月28日，惨烈的大地震突袭唐山。一夜之间城市化作废墟，在文化宫担任教师的李元妮（陈小艺 饰）的丈夫万大成（张涵予 饰），而这个身心饱受创伤的母亲还要被迫作出痛苦抉择：孪生姐弟万登和万达只能救助一人。被母亲“放弃”的万登侥幸活命，谁知从此和母亲生离死别。解放军王德清（张国立 饰）将万登收为养女，父女情深。另一边厢，元妮凭借一己之力艰苦生活，可是儿子不成器的表现让她忧伤不已，愈加思念那个生死未卜的女儿。时光流转，万登和万达两姐弟渐渐长大，共同经历着人生的苦辣酸甜。大地震留给他们的恰是永远无法抹灭的记忆和永远不能割舍的亲情羁绊…… 本片根据华裔女作家张翎的中篇小说《余震》改编。。Twenty years ago at the infamous Redwood Farm, the owner went mad and killed his family and himself.
